Renovated Bassett Hall now open
Two years of extensive renovation returned Bassett Hall to its place in history. Home to Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Jr. during the early years of the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, it is located on the south side of Francis Street. The 18th-century frame house was originally restored by Abby Aldrich and John D. Rockefeller Jr. in the 1930s. The comfortable family home includes a collection of art and objects that reflect the interests and tastes of the Rockefellers.
The home's 2002 comprehensive renovation included
- A new exhibition integrating the history of the Rockefellers at Bassett hall with the early years of the Williamsburg restoration
- Updated house tour with live interpreters
- Reopening kitchen, pantry, and caretakers' quarters at the back of the house
- Conversion of the original kitchen to an exhibition area
- Recreation of the gardens to as they appeared in the 1940s, adding more than 5,000 new trees, shrubs, and ground cover
- Extensive maintenance and conservation work
