Fourteen years ago, he was Mateo Blanco, a film director. After a brutal car crash in Lansarote took both his sight and his wife, Lena (Penélope Cruz), he reduced himself to Harry Caine, a playful pseudonym with which he signs his literary works, stories, and scripts. Unable to direct films, he can only survive by believing that Mateo Blanco died with his beloved Lena. Now, Harry lives with help from his former production manager, Judit Garcia, and her son Diego. Operating with self-induced amnesia, Harry developed his other senses in order to enjoy life.
But, when Diego asks about when he answered to the name Mateo Blanco, Harry can’t refuse. Director Pedro Almodóvar presents a moving and terrible story about a man who writes, lives, and loves in darkness. Nominated for a Golden Palm at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2010 Golden Globes. Spanish with subtitles. Mar. 5–7, 9, 11 screening room. 128 mins.

In Werner Herzog’s new film, Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is to scoring drugs while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge and his gun to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he becomes a high-functioning addict as well as a deeply intuitive, fearless detective who roams through the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon.
Complicating his tumultuous life is a prostitute, played by Eva Mendes, and together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. Nicolas Cage won Best Actor at the 2009 Toronto Film Critics Association Awards. Mar. 8, 10, 12–14 screening room. 121 mins.
